Under the moniker Tammy the Toy, Tammy Y. Kim works as a fashion-inspired creative director, illustrator, and designer. She is a RISD and SVA alumn with a Bachelors in Illustration, a Masters in Education, and a PhD in Fierce.
The "toy" in Tammy's name is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to her childhood dreams of playing dress up. In her youth, Tammy spent her days in uniform at a parochial school and nights in uniform at her father's martial arts studio. As a way to make light of the situation, she would create characters with fantastical outfits she wished to wear. To this day, her work finds humor through fashion.
Tammy's artistic philosophy is based on the Korean concept of "han" and "heung". Although Koreans have historically endured melancholy (han), they have an overwhelming desire to experience joy (heung). Thus, her artwork consolidates the dark, idiosyncratic, and silly. Through Instagram, her drawings have intrigued similarly peculiar appreciators including RuPaul's Drag Race stars, Kpop celebrities, indie musicians, and Al Hirschfeld's art agent. By finding the beauty in "han", Tammy hopes her work continues to give others "heung."
